Coldplay Viva La Vida Rar4/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() You will hear that rhythm both featured as well as in the background if you listen closely. Too bad Gershwin can’t sue since he’s dead and his music is now Public Domain. So if Joe Satriani and Cat Stevens want to make a big deal about it… I think they have Gershwin to answer to first because they ripped off the actual original from 1931. I’ve attached an (highly) abridged version that was used in the 2014 Broadway musical “An American in Paris” (also the same title of another Gershwin work but that’s a story for another day), which makes that rhythm stand out more prominently due to its smaller band with drums rather than the full symphony orchestra. The lyrics to the song contain historical and Christian references, and the track is built around a looping string section in unison with a digital. It was written by all members of the band for their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008). For those of you familiar with that name, it is entitled the “2nd Rhapsody” (right after the very famous “Rhapsody in Blue”). Viva la Vida is a song by British rock band Coldplay. ![]() Let me tell you now, the piece I was listening to was composed in 1931 by one of the greatest American composers of all time, George Gershwin. ![]() Then I did a Google Search and learned about the whole Joe Satriani trying to sue CP for copyright and Cat Stevens coming outta nowhere. I was just listening to one of my favorite “jazzical” pieces and thought “wow…this reminds me so much of CP’s Viva La Vida. ![]()
